ASCA 2010 - Boston - final post
The last morning of the conference, in true die hard fashion I attended a workshop on social networking. I know we have more people at FLVS on the cutting edge than any work shop presenter, but this was from a counselor perspective. The presenter, Paul Johnson, was demonstrating how counselors can use social networking to get information to students. His main point was that this is where our kids live. They are “digital natives”. At the very least we must become fully functioning “digital emigrants” and not remain “digital refugees”. Cute terminology. Really good discussion of what counselors can do. I got some good ideas for new blogs. Once again it became very apparent that our team is a few light years ahead in this area. He was showing some counselors how to send a text.
One last thought. This was a great conference. The best part of the whole conference was being able to spend some time with Amy and Morgan. It reminded me of how badly we need a bit of F2F time during the year. We generated ideas, gained confidence, talked about strengths and weaknesses, ate great food, ate horrible food, and generally remembered who we are. There is nothing like it. Morgan is going to be a great addition to our team this year. I think we need twice yearly F2F meetings that last more than an afternoon. We need to be thinking about practical ways to do it that don’t cost FLVS a fortune. We need a day in July at the beginning of the year and a day in January or February.
I have come back home knowing we will provide better service for more students in 10-11 than we ever have before….and also knowing that we have a long way to go.
